New Perspectives: Tips for Selecting Great Used Boots

Men's fashion should be two things: simple and functional. Any "look" (try to avoid "looks", by the way) that deviates too far from these two qualities is unlikely to be around for long (looking at you deep v-neck t-shirts).

As far as I can tell, all fashion trends experience a regression to the mean - that is to say, there's a great chance that the clothes men will wear 20 years in the future will closely resemble the clothes worn 40 years in the past. This is especially the case with boots.

That's good news too, considering how easy it is to find used boots from thrift shops and online that look just as dapper on you when you're hanging out with your lady as when you're treating a client to lunch. And we've failed to mention the sustainability angle of re-owning leather footwear. I mean, I'm no vegan, but surely wearing fewer dead cows on your feet is better than wearing more, right?

Then there's the matter of style and quality. If a store is selling boots several decades older than the employees working there, there must be a demand for the shoe, and the shoes must be well-made to have held up for that long. Trends come and go, but boots that stick around for generations are usually solid.

Here are some qualities to look for when buying used boots and some tips for caring for them.

What to Look For

Fit:  A good cobbler can do many things, but making a pair of boots fit your foot isn't one of them.

Too Small is Too Small: I bought a pair of cowboy boots once that were a half-size too small because I thought they looked great and wanted to wear them for a gig I was playing. That was a huge mistake.

The Heel: Heels made from wood or leather are far better quality than those made of plastic or rubber, and thus far easier for a cobbler to work with.

The Last: Look for hand lasting over machine lasting. This is important for quality and fit.

Red Flags: If the boot exhibits any of these qualities, think twice about buying.

  • Sole pulling away from the shoe.

  • Tears in the leather away from the seam.
  • The lining is cracked, flaky, falling apart.
  • The boots are far cheaper than you expected.

Care

Clean Them: Jerry Seinfeld has a bit about leather ideally being about to withstand all of nature's forces, just like the cow it came from. Unfortunately this isn't the case. It's important to brush dirt and residue off boots because they lessen the boot's water repellence.

Oil Them: Like human skin, leather dries out over time. To keep leather strong and durable, it needs to be oiled. Synthetic and natural compounds work equally well, although natural compounds darken the shade of the leather whereas synthetics do not.

Find A Cobbler: If there's a downside to buying vintage boots, it's that they come with miles on them. Find a cobbler who can do occasional repairs and give you maintenance tips.

Old, But New

There are many pairs of vintage men's boots looking for a home. The most important thing to remember when buying them is that while you can re-sole a boot, you want the boot to be well made. Look for full-grain leather, wooden or leather soles instead of straight rubber or plastic, and, of course, look for a boot that looks timeless.

Transitioning Summer Clothes

There's no need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for fall. That would be wasteful, and totally uncreative! Instead, use these essential items to help transition you summer wardrobe into fun fall outfits.

1. Cardigan. A classic cardigan is the simplest way to wear a summer dress into the fall months.

Cardigan

2. A scarf. Scarves are my fav - they are cute and cover that skin that may no longer be appropriate later in the year - and make all t-shirts work appropriate!

Zebra scarf - have it in yellow!

3. Tights. Don't be afraid of nude nylons! They give an extra layer of warmth and most people won't even be able to tell you're wearing them - trust me. Then, when it really gets cold, switch to grey/brown/black/navy tights.

Colored Nylons....adorable

4. Booties. Skirts and flip flops are on their way out, but booties are perfect for that skirt before you go into knee-high boot mode.

5. Blazer. Like a cardigan, a blazer will not only dress up your look, it will also keep you nice and toasty.

In My Weekend Bag

Off to spend one more long weekend at the beach before the end of summer. Below is my eco packing list!

1. Deodorant is one of those things I always forget to pack, thus it always goes at the top of my packing list. Crystal is great because it does a good job of keeping you dry without aluminum chlorohydrate.

2. Chemical-free sunscreen is a MUST for a beach weekend.

3. Woodies solid bamboo sunglasses (just purchased these via groupon goods!)

4. A weekend at the beach also requires nail polish in order to quickly repair chips in your pedi caused by playing in the sand. Butter London is a great nontoxic nail polish choice.

5. Since I'll be avoiding wrinkle-causing UVA/UVB rays with my chemical-free sunscreen, I'll also need a paraben-free self tanner so that I can fake a post-beach glow. I love Fair by FakeBake.

6. Salty seawater gets my lips all chapped, so I'll def be bringing my organic eos lipbalm.

7. Tom's strappy wedges are perfect for apres-beach parties.

RRR: Shoe Woo Wow!

Saturday in NYC this past weekend was beautiful! So what better way to be a tourist than walking around and hitting the shops! In Shoe Woo I could barely even look at the shoes because I was so distracted by the AMAZING sculpture in the middle of the store. It was hundreds of old shoes, painted, and built around one of the store's huge columns. I love when RRR creates something so visually stunning.

Find Gifts at North End Boutiques

Support the local economy this gift-giving season by steering clear of the mall. Area boutiques are a great way to find unique and thoughtful items and support small businesses. Of course, its always a bonus to find a sustainably produced item in a boutique - that would be a  double win!

Here are my top boutique picks for Boston's North End:

5. Sedurre - This recently expanded shop at the corner of Prince St. and Hanover St. is no longer just a lingerie store - they now carry all sorts of women's clothing and accessories.

4. In-jean-ius - The best place to find the perfect fitting high-end jeans! Located on Hanover St.

3. Eclectic - This North St. store is full of fun home goods - including some eco-favorites like Sea Bags.

2. LIT Boutique - Full of sparkly dresses, shoes, jewelry, and bags, it is hard to walk down Hanover St. everyday without stopping in!

1. Shake the Tree - Shake the Tree on Salem St. is my absolute favorite boutique in the North End. It has all sorts of fun things - home goods, clothes, stationary, cookbooks, and more. Plus, I love the international/worldly vibe.

GWBW: Outdoor Activities

It has been a good week for cyclists in Chicago because this week, the city unveiled Chicago's first protected bike lane!

It has been a bad week for locals that love snowy outdoor activities such as snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and sledding. Temps in Boston were in the 60s this week! What happened to winter???!

3. Lotus Earrings from Ecolissa.com

4. A Cozy Wool Snood by PeopleTree

5. A Subscription to Coco Eco Magazine

6. A Garment Steamer (more efficient than an iron!)

Love.

See Change

TOM's Shoes has just come out with a line of eyewear! I absolutely LOVE my TOM's shoes - super comfortable, reasonably priced, match everything, plus it feels great to know that by purchasing those shoes, a disadvantaged person would also get a pair of shoes. Now, the same thing can be done for vision! The sunglasses are a bit more expensive than the shoes - they start at $100 or so. However, this $100 investment will not only get you a stylish pair of shades, it will also help pay for someone's vision medical care - be it surgery or glasses.

I think I'm going to splurge on the wayfarer design. Now here's the real question: tourtise shell or black?!

Tom's Shoes for a Casual Summer

Since I'm a "low-carbon" city girl, I do A LOT of walking. Especially as the weather gets warmer, I walk just about everywhere. It is great exercise and a wonderful way to learn the ins and outs of the city, but I tend to go through shoes rather quickly. So, I'm gearing up for a productive spring and summer buy purchasing quality casual shoes with a mission: Tom's Shoes.

Tom's shoes has a unique business design where for every pair of shoes purchased, another pair is donated to people in need around the world. The shoes seem kind of expensive, but you're really buying two pairs of shoes, one for yourself and one for someone that may have never owned shoes before. The photo below shows a few children in Argentina with their brand new Tom's shoes:

I ordered my olive classics yesterday and CANNOT wait for their arrival!
And, yes, I know Tom's are a bit hippy-ish, but lots of people have been able to pull them off stylishly. I'd say that my personal style is sort of bohemian prep and I think my new shoes will fit seemlessly into my summer wardrobe.
See ya on the streets!
