Shark Week!

Source images courtesy of  1 / 2 / 3 / 4

For the past few summers, stories of great white shark sightings off Cape Cod have topped the news. Normally, this doesn't surprise or intrigue me, but after reading Paul Greenberg's Four Fish, I now understand the importance of this issue - and think that it is especially important for Bostonians. We have a responsibility to protect these creatures despite their terrifying reputation. They, like all wildlife, are an essential component to the ecosystem.

This past Tuesday, OCEARCH began a month-long project aiming to tag 10-20 great whites off the coast of Chatham. As of today, none have yet been tagged because the sharks haven't been going for the bait (fish) because their meal of choice (seals) has been quite abundant in the area. But the the project is anticipated to be the largest Great White Shark expedition in U.S. history. “This expedition brings together an amazing team of researchers with broad experience in multiple disciplines. In doing so, we will be conducting over a dozen studies on white sharks, ranging from broad and fine scale migratory patterns to sonograms.  Our knowledge base on Atlantic white sharks will grow exponentially, helping both science and public safety.”

Guest Post: Intro to New Generation Energy

Our Mission

First things first - thanks for having us on Boston Green Blog! Here at New Generation Energy, we love the Boston Green Blog and are very excited to be even a small part of it.

For those of you who don’t know us, New Generation Energy (NGE) is a Boston nonprofit aiming to help local nonprofits become more sustainable. Basically, by helping nonprofits go green, we get to help our environment and our community at the same time. A nonprofit can focus on their own mission and put the money they save through every green initiative back into their own projects.

NGE works to educate nonprofits about the importance of energy efficiency, fundraise for sustainability projects and build communities with interest environmental causes. NGE is currently working on the foundation of two initiatives; Young & Green and Local & Green.

Young & Green

If you are a young professional between 21 and 45 with an interest in sustainability, Young & Green would be a perfect group for you. This Young Professional group aims to bring together like-minded environmentally conscious individuals in the Boston area. Young & Green is a group for focused individuals who have an interest in their community, sustainability and helping non-profits thrive. A great social outlet for Boston professionals, Young & Green hosts monthly events for all members and interested parties. These may include private events, related speaking programs, networking opportunities and many others. Our events partner with local Boston businesses to provide members with a fun and unique experience as well as provide the benefit of discounted tickets on all NGE events outside of the group.

Young & Green’s most recent event was a mixer at Mass Ave Tavern in Back Bay. About fifty young professionals were in attendance from around the greater Boston area. The night was spent enjoying food and new company while discussing mutual interests in sustainability around Boston. Right now, we are in talks about our summer event, so make sure to keep an eye out here: http://newgenerationenergy.org/youngandgreen

Local & Green - Helping nonprofits raise impact by reducing their carbon footprint.

NGE’s largest program is Local & Green, an initiative that provides hands-on support for energy efficiency projects in the local community. For one year, NGE helps selected regional nonprofits become more sustainable, designing and implementing projects to help nonprofits save money and increase their impact. From project design to 100% funding, Local & Green is NGE’s 360° approach to powering sustainable communities. NGE and Local & Green have worked with the Asian Task Force Against Domestic
Violence, Cambridge Community Center, Community Servings and the Elizabeth Peabody House.

And that wraps it up! Thanks again Boston Green Blog and if you have any further questions regarding NGE, Young & Green or Local & Green feel free to contact Dylan Joffe at joffe@newgenerationenergy.org for details. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook and check out our own blog!

Recap: NEWIEE Social Media Success in the Energy & Environmental Sectors

The panel discussion hosted by NEWIEE at Digitas last night was great - each of the four speakers gave good practical advice on successfully spreading the message of sustainability through social media. Social media is becoming increasingly important as word-of-mouth is becoming digitized, but the many ever-changing nature of internet communication can be overwhelming, so it was great to hear the panelists share some tricks of the trade.

The audience was made up of people from many different sectors  - non profit, government, media, small business, etc., and they had some interesting questions for the panelists. I actually wish the question & answer segment of the event was longer because the panelists gave interesting answers and sparked some good discussions. Here are a few of the key points of the event:

Building an Audience:
-Use all different types of media to build an audience (radio, anyone?)
-Use images/graphics to draw attention to your message
-Think about who is invested in your project, and cater to their interests when possible
-Find out who the "influencers" in your field are and follow their example
-Use eye-catching/shocking statistics
-Become an expert in your subject
-Don't just push out information, engage your audience in genuine communication (see below)

Maintaining & Engaging an Audience:
-Give people a reason to come back to your facebook page (deals/discounts)
-Engage your audience by encouraging feedback (quizzes/polls)
-Keep track of what types of posts get the most hits/retweets/likes
-Keep track of what types of tweets bring the most traffic (questions, facts, jokes)
-Listen to what people want, make it a two-way conversation
-Ask others to share their stories and feedback

3rd Annual Fragrance Free Day - August 10th

The 3rd Annual Fragrance Free Day is happening next Friday, August 10th, hosted by SeaYu.

The Environmental Protection Association (EPA) states that fragranced products like air fresheners, fabric refreshers and traditional cleaning products contribute to poor indoors air quality, which can lead to health issues.

Fragrance Free Day helps raise awareness about the dangers of fragrances in personal care and household products by giving people the chance to go “fragrance free” for one day.  That means no perfumes, colognes, scented lotions or harsh cleaning products with added fragrances for one full day!

On Fragrance Free Day (August 10th), SeaYu will be hosting a live Twitter chat from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST using hashtag #fragrancefreeday. Participants can get all their questions and concerns about fragranced products answered by a panel of experts including:
-Quincy Yu, Founder of SeaYu and green living expert
-Dr. Patrick Mahaney, Veterinarian, Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist
            -Dr. Stephan Ziman, organic chemist

I'll be joining! See ya'll in the twittisphere!

#EcoMonday is a weekly hashtag on twitter in which people list their favorite environmentally themed twitter feeds. If you are new to twitter or are simply looking for more green accounts to follow, I highly suggest searching #ecomonday for some great ideas on who to follow. It is also a great way to discover local companies, green blogs, and find out about events. Get more involved in the green community every #EcoMonday!!!

Exciting Happenings!

This week has been full of exciting things for me and for BGB.

1) Just got some pretty "sustainability writer" business cards printed up by Pixxlz on 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Plus, Pixxlz is a local company, so I'm going to walk over to their office and pick up my order instead of having them shipped.

2) I had a great time at the 80% Challenge Climate Change event. I saw old friends from the Sustainable Endowments Institute and the Sustainable Performance Institute (formerly the Nexus Green Building Resource Center). At the event I learned a lot about who believes in climate change and who doesn't. There are some very interesting demographic stats.

3) Getting pumped for EarthFest 2011 tomorrow afternoon!

4) Just started using an amazing organic face lotion (product review coming soon) and I feel great.

5) Was told I am one of "the most prolific bloggers" (yay!)

6) Lots of new followers on twitter ....partially because I went on a major following spree yesterday and this morning.

7) IT STOPPED RAINING IN BOSTON!!!!!!!!!!! fingers crossed for a sunny weekend!

Top Ten Fav Twitterers

Twitter helps feed my need for news and gossip in a to-the-point quick way. However, twitter is completely ueseless if you aren't following interesting feeds. My favorite feeds so far are:

1. @nprnews - This one is obvious. I'm an NPR junkie.

2. @BostonUpdate - The city's quick & easy news and culture outlet.

3. @StLawU - Keeps me posted on my alma mater.

4. @GlobalPost - The best and most interesting international news source.

5. @ChelseaLately - Always good for a laugh

6. @EPAgov - The best of the EPA twitter feeds

7. @TTranscript - Keeps me posted on my hometown

8. @TWYE - If you know what this is, then you already know what a helpful tool it
is (if not and you're on a diet, check out http://www.tweetwhatyoueat.com/ to see what all the fuss is about)

9. @MeridaHome - Shameless plug for my company, but the twitter feed does have great links, deals, contests, and advice for people at all interest levels of green design.

10. @CameronBruns - another shameless plug.
