Spotlight: Junkluggers Expand Service to Boston

The Junkluggers is a NYC-based junk removal company that is rapidly expanding across the northeast. Founder & CEO Josh Cohen is planning to bring his green trucks, and eco-friendly green business model, to the land of the Green Monster!

The Junkluggers is planning to open 2 to 3 locations in Boston by the end of 2015, and 10-15 in the state of Massachusetts. The company currently has 5 locations throughout Connecticut, New York City, Long Island, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Each location typically adds 5-10 jobs and the company partners with local charities and donation centers to make sure that the “junk” they remove can potentially find a home with someone who really needs it.

The Junkluggers will remove almost any unwanted item and find it a new home. They avoid sending items to landfills and believe that recycling is a form of passive philanthropy.

Spotlight: BostonEco

So you want to get more involved in sustainability initiatives but don't know where to start or even what you're particular interest is? Start by following BostonEco on twitter and facebook. BostonEco is a social media community that centralizes information for all green initiatives in and around the city. Following BostonEco is an absolute must for green-minded people in Massachusetts.

BostonEco's mission to further healthy, sustainable ideas and initiatives locally and globally. The community is knowledgeable on the basics of healthy, natural living. BostonEco supports and promotes green initiatives, news, and events happening in the Boston area and suburbs from like-minded local organizations.

BostonEco was one of the first feeds I began following when I started Boston Green Blog. Through them I learn about upcoming events, job openings, local policy issues, and more. 

Spotlight: New England Women in Energy and the Environment

This week's spotlight is on New England Women in Energy and the Environment (NEWIEE). This is a networking group of accomplished professionals working for environmental sustainability in both the public and private sectors across the northeast. The group is a non-profit that provides business networking, education, mentoring, leadership, career development, and social opportunities for New England's female executives, engineers, consultants, attorneys, academics, policy makers, and other professionals with an interest in energy and/or environmental issues.

I became a contributing member of NEWIEE this past spring, and it has been a rewarding experience, and has strengthened my ties to the local green community. I've attended a handful of events so far, including a mentoring cocktail hour, a lecture on nanotechnology, and a  panel discussion on how social media is affecting environmental initiatives. I love the variety of topics the group covers, and am looking forward to attending future events. In particular, I am excited about their First Annual Meeting / Fall Fling, scheduled for early October. (Details to come soon!)

Recap: Tufts Environmental Alumni Career Panel

No, I am not a Tufts alum, but it turns out that many of the university's alumni networking events are actually open to the public. Last night the Tufts Environmental Alumni hosted a career panel during which four successful environmentalists shared their experiences and advice. I went with my sister (who actually did go to Tufts) to check it out. The panel included:

NEWIEE Mentorship Program

New England Women in Energy and the Environment is a group of accomplished professionals working for environmental sustainability in both the public and private sectors across the northeast. The group is a non-profit that provides business networking, education, mentoring, leadership, career development, and social opportunities for New England's female executives, engineers, consultants, attorneys, academics, policy makers, and other professionals with an interest in energy and/or environmental issues.


NEWIEE recently launched  a new mentoring program!  The goal is to create one on one matches or mentoring groups to allow women from all stages of their careers to come together and learn from those with different levels of experience.  If you are interested in either becoming a mentor, or a mentee, CLICK HERE  to fill out a survey.  There will be a kick-off event for the mentoring program in late March.  Responses to the survey will allow NEWIEE organizers to match compatible mentors with mentees. Job Opening at The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is seeking a temporary marketing support staffer to assist with public relations, media and marketing activities throughout New England.  The six-month, part-time position will be based in Boston. Approximately 15 hours per week during regular business hours. 

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and experience in marketing communications or media, including demonstrable experience with journalistic or business writing. Experience with social media, video editing, web writing, strategic communications or event planning is a plus.

Duties will include assisting our New England marketing team with efforts to increase the Conservancy’s visibility, and could include; marketing research and database management, media tracking and reporting, basic media pitching and press release preparation, writing for web or print publications, community outreach event logistics and support.
